Sound Bible Christian Teaching Pertaining to Intersex and Gender Identity (Hermaphrodite*)

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Domingo Mora For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.KJV Gal 3:26-28 The scientific, and to a lesser extent the social, understanding of gender has significantly improved as more study and research into this matter has yielded proof that has served to disprove numerous harmful myths. Nevertheless, those who are intersexed and those who do not fit the conventional expectation for gender identity continue to suffer social stigma and merciless marginalization, even at the hands of those who claim to be Christians. PURPOSE OF STUDY The purpose of this study is to shed some light on the Biblical application, meaning and purpose of gender. Upon close examination of scripture, we will discover that there is nothing hideous or remotely negative about being in a state of gender identity that defies the traditionally rigid definition. The truth of the bible and the assertions thereof, if correctly understood, cannot be contradicted by any findings. It is the duty of the Christian to humbly, prayerfully and diligently search for the truth in the bible. Do remember that one cannot come to a perfect understanding in this realm, but the Lord is faithful and very generous with wisdom to those who are his. We also look forward to perfect knowledge with the next coming of Christ. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. KJV 1Cor 13:9-13 DEFINITIONS Key earthly terms for this study; -Gender, as pertaining to humans, refers to the notion that people can divided into groups known as sexes, i.e. male and female, or neither. -In sociology, gender identity describes the gender with which a person identifies (i.e., whether one perceives oneself to be a man, a woman, or describes oneself to oneself in some less conventional way), but also can be used to refer to the gender that other people attribute to the individual on the basis of what they know from gender role indications (clothing, hair style, etc.). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_identity. -An intersexual or intersex person (or organism of any unisexual species) is one who is born with genitalia and/or secondary sex characteristics determined as neither exclusively male nor female, or which combine features of the male and female sexes. The terms hermaphrodite and pseudohermaphrodite, introduced in the 19th century, are now considered antiquated, misleading and stigmatizing, and patient advocates call for these terms to be abandoned [1]. The phrase “ambiguous genitalia” refers specifically to genital appearance, but not all intersex conditions result in atypical genital appearance [2] . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersex THE GENDER CONCEPT While these definitions above may need some improvement they do provide a provide us with a point of reference as we delve into the bible for the spiritual application of gender concept and in so doing, we will hopefully dispel most, if not all, sexist ideas that are erroneously accepted as biblical or for that matter Christian. We begin in familiar territory, the most basic spiritual teaching that embodies gender; Christ and His Bride. The bible insists that Christ is in a marital relationship with those he has saved. This is illustrated in the letter to the Ephesians as the Christian is instructed on his or her walk in Christ: (Suggestion; Please read entire chapters of the bible to better grasp the context) Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.KJV Eph 5:21-27 THE PURPOSE OF GENDER Next we will attempt to define the concept of gender based on the biblical usage. As we skim though the verses above it looks obvious that God is drawing parallels between the two relationships, one earthly (man and wife) and the other spiritual ( Christ and his spiritual church). This may lead to the notion that the spiritual marriage somehow the copy or shadow of the earthly marriage between a man and a woman. This instinctive deduction is only natural because we exist in the physical realm and we have to really try a little harder to see things spiritually. Upon reading on to the end of the chapter, we find that the focus of this passage is clearly the Lord and his spiritual church as opposed to marriage as we commonly know it. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.KJV Eph 5:28-33 What we should understand from the example above is that the perfect marriage is the spiritual one, the heavenly one. The marriage between two physical humans is the shadow of that true and perfect marriage between the Lord and his people, this can be referred to as the Fulfilment. The purpose of gender is to show the relationship between Christ and his Eternal Church. ( Not your physical neighborhood church) SHADOW AND FULFILLMENT This shadow and fulfillment relationship of earthly things and concepts to heavenly ones is seen throughout scripture, and a proper understanding of how God uses it to illustrate spiritual themes is crucial to the bible student. The following are some example of shadow fulfillment relationships: Sacrificial lamb Jesus Christ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.John 1:29 Physical Birth Spiritual Birth That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.John 3:6-7 Physical Sword The Spiritual Word of God Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The High Priest in Jerusalem (right up to the Crucifixion of Christ)- Christ our Heavenly High Priest 1. Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2. A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. 3. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. 4. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5. Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Physical Food-Spiritual Food (Christ and His Gospel) John 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:48 I am that bread of life. APPLICATION OF THE PHYSICAL TO SPIRITUAL RELATIONSHIPS Above are just a few examples of readily discernable verses that illustrate the Shadow-Fulfillment relationship that are taught in the bible. What is harder to perceive is that in these Shadow-Fulfillment relationship the substance is actually in the fulfillment part of the equation. This is to say that the clear intention and purpose of the concept embodied is the Fulfillment part only. To demonstrate this we look at an example that our Lord Jesus Christ uses in the Gospel of John as he teaches us making the comparison between the miraculously provided manna that God via Moses gave to the wandering Israelites, and Jesus Christ who is the source of external life as the manna was the source of physical nutrition to these Israelite; Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.John 6:31-33 John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. Here we see that the true bread is the one from heaven, namely Jesus Christ, and that physical bread (food) serves only to point to the Spiritual bread which everyone needs to have eternal life. Eternal life is obviously represented by physical life which is notoriously short. In this same respect gender in humans is just a shadow or a picture of the Perfect and True gender concept that is entirely spiritual. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.KJV Eph 5:28-33 Re 21:9 And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lambs wife. Re 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. THE GENDER OF GOD Concerning this true gender concept the Male is Jesus Christ and all the those who are saved make up the Female counterpart. Yes, all believers are spiritually female, and the only true male is Jesus Christ. It is very important to note that the only reason God provided for gender in the physical realm is only as a witness of heavenly reality. By this I mean, that there is no innate difference whatsoever between men and women, we are simply humans, and if it would have pleased God to create us is such a manner as to reproduce by asexual mechanisms, He would have done so. We do see a great variety of organisms in nature that do so, but the Lord our God in his great wisdom, mercy and providence has used yet another aspect of creation to declare His truth. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Rom 1:18-20 This understanding also answers any question one may have about the gender of God. Since gender represents the relationship between God and his people, God is the only true male. The natural question is Why then is the Bible full of verses and commands that clearly address matters of gender? Yes, the Bible is very involved, especially with regard to how the woman should relate to the man. I am NOT at all suggesting that these verses should be disregarded by believers in the physical realm or that these verses do not have a physical application. What I am saying is that as the Christian obeys the gender specific verses of the bible, he or she is maintaining a picture of the true and incorruptible heavenly relationship between Christ and his heavenly church. While the picture or shadow has no substance or value in itself ( the substance is in what it refers to) God does insist that the picture or shadow be kept pure. To show this let us visit a more familiar concept, sin offering or sacrifices. Among the laws that God gave Moses there are numerous concerning the need for believers to offer sacrifices. The purpose of these offerings was clear; to provide a covering for sin. These offerings of sacrifices were required by Mosaic Law (The law of God)and were to be performed in very specific manners. If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. Lev 1:3-4 And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full ears. And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon: it is a meat offering. Lev 2:14-15 The question here is whether these activities provided any spiritual benefit. If a person sinned and followed through with the prescribed sacrifice ( in the physical realm), would this course of action lead to covering of sin? The answer is of course not For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Heb 10:4 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. Heb 10:1-13 Yes, all these offerings pointed to the true and perfect sacrifice that God provided us; His Son Jesus Christ. This is the only offering that can cover sin, all the sacrifices before Christ went to the cross were simply a shadow of his sacrifice. While these sacrifices in themselves had no substance, they pointed to a very pure and holy Person and event, and thus God laid out very specific rules about how these shadows would be administered. It was quite a grievous offence to perform these rites inappropriately, King Saul comes to mind, (1Sam 13:5-14) and so do the sons of Aaron (Lev 10:1-3) We conclude that God is very adamant that the picture or shadow be kept pure because what the picture points to is indeed pure. IS THE HUSBAND THE BOSS OF THE WIFE? What we learn is, while the focus of all of Gods laws spiritual indeed, the preservation of the integrity of the pictures or shadows that point to these spiritual things is of great importance to God and should be observed by his believers. For example, when God in the Bible gives instruction about how husbands and wives are to relate to each other, wives are to revere their own husbands (as Sarah revered Abraham and called him Lord, as the eternal Church reveres Jesus, her husband and calls Him Lord) not because these physical husbands are something special in themselves (they are hopefully simply sinners saved by grace as their wives hopefully are) but because by so doing they keep the portrait intact. The only difference is that God has designated husbands to represent the Lord Jesus and wives to represent his eternal Church that is made up of his elect. So, it is sinful for a wife to revere her husband (or for that matter a husband to expect reverence) for any other reason except that all believers should revere the Lord, as it would be sinful for a believer before the cross to have expected forgiveness to emanate from a physical burnt offering. A wife should always revere her husband because the eternal church always reveres the Lord Jesus Christ. Perfection is only possible in the spiritual realm except for the case of Christ Jesus who took on a physical nature for our redemption. HOW DOES ALL THIS PERTAIN TO THE INTERSEXED OR THOSE WITH OTHER GENDER IDENTITY ISSUES? The very existence of those with ambiguous gender designation is in itself very providential in that it serves as proof that the gender concept is only pure and true in the spiritual realm. This is necessary because human beings are physical (carnal, flesh) and we do not readily, if at all, visualize spiritual concepts, we are rather quick to assume that a lot of heavenly concepts are fully realized in the physical realm. Briefly, if the true and full expression of gender was physical, the sexes would always be clearly divided without exception and we would be able to say that this would provide the basis for male superiority. This is not so, the reality is that the sexes are not ever so clearly defined in the physical realm; we find feminine men, masculine women, those who are intersexed and a variety of other conditions. All these should point us to the spiritual reality where the gender concept is truly manifest and the gender definition crystal clear. All human beings are physically from Adam and stand on the same level, sinners in need of mercy. Lose Weight With Clinical Trialed Diet Pills

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Brenda Devlin Clinical trial is the only objective indicator that a certain diet pill or appetite suppressant is in fact effective. From scientific point of view a specific weight loss product really works only if it passed extensive scientific test. There are several expressions for clinical trial: clinical test, clinical study. They all mean the same. A specific diet drug, food supplement or appetite suppressant that passed clinical trial is proven to have measurable effect on human body. Such drug actually works. If we come back to diet pills and appetite suppressant, an average person seeking for weight loss products easily comes across this statement: diet pill that really works. Those should be considered with healthy dosage of skepticism. One should seek for clinical trial of the product he intends to purchase. The first conclusion one could make is, that if a diet pill or appetite suppressant has clinical trial, that product must be good. Actually it is not that easy. There are all sorts of clinical trials out there. Not each kind of trial can be trusted. But there are some basic principles one should consider when looking at clinical trial. Firstly, the medical institutions involved (at least two independent institutions) in a trial should be from countries that you can trust. USA or EU standards of conducting a clinical study are different than for example in India. Secondly, one should look at the size of the group involved in the trial. Test groups of 200 people or less are rarely considered as scientific approach. Thirdly, one should make sure that the clinical trial concerned, has been executed on humans. If a specific weight loss pill or appetite suppressant made a rat loose 20 grams in a day, there is no objective way to transfer those results on human body. Regardless the fact that clinical trial makes it easy to categorize diet pills and appetite suppressants according to effectiveness, one should know that clinical trials are not compulsory for all dietary products. Only prescription drugs must have those in order to be eligible for selling in US and EU. Food nutrition supplements, among them no prescription diet pills and over the counter appetite suppressants, do not have to pass clinical trials. Regardless to that, most sophisticated over the counter diet products have clinical trials. Clinical trials are becoming a must have quality statement, which helps serious drug producers gain respect on the market. Child Custody in Oklahoma

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Todd Going The laws in Oklahoma define temporary custody of a child as a decision made by the parents at the time of separation. Sometimes what could be in the best interest of the child at the time of separation might not be the best for the child down the road. Legal custody is the next step of the Oklahoma child custody process. This is determined by which parent is able to make the legal choices for the child. The choices include education, health care, religion, and whats in the best interest for the childs general welfare. Joint custody and legal custody are two different things in Oklahoma. Joint legal custody splits the decision making responsibilities between the parents while sole legal custody allocates all of the decision making power to one parent. Physical custody is where the child will actually get to live. This is split into two categories; sole physical custody and joint physical custody. Sole physical custody is given to the parent that the child actually gets to live with. The other parent is limited to visitation right determined through mediation or by the Oklahoma court system. Joint physical custody is a very rare circumstance in the state of Oklahoma. Joint physical custody would allow the child to live with both of the parents for a given set of time. Rarely is it determined that joint physical custody is in the best interest of the child. The courts in Oklahoma do not judge parents on gender, school district or the life they live. In difficult times it is important to know that the decision will be made based off of what is in the best interest of the child. Quick Ways to Lose Weight

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Kelvin Ho Wee Min With so many diets and weight loss plans on the market, there are many quick ways to lose weight nowadays. Among them, the South Beach Diet is one that has been gaining some attention. This diet focuses on the glycemic index where good carbs are separated from bad carbs, and bad fats from good fats. There are no calories to count you eat until you are full, three times a day with two snacks in between. This diet works in phases where the first phase is extremely limited, followed by a second phase with the addition of good carbs, and finally the third phase which is a liberal maintenance plan. Another diet, the Atkins Diet, is often confused with the South Beach Diet. However, these two ways to lose weight differ in many ways. In the Atkins diet, all carbs are limited. The aim is to consume as few carbs as possible. No protein or fat is limited. This diet has raised some eyebrows due to its lack of concern for saturated fats. Then there is Nutrisystem, a complete eating plan where the food comes prepackaged in 4-week parcels. It focuses on the glycemic index, like the South Beach Diet, and offers a variety of foods you can choose from. All foods are instant, meaning that little preparation is required. Because everything is measured for you, this is an easier plan for those with portion control problems. Another way to lose weight is through the Fat Loss for Idiots diet plan, where foods and types of calories consumed changes every few days. With a menu that constantly changes, youll be able to eat many kinds of foods. The logic behind this diet is swap the menu when your body becomes accustomed to one menu. Still, other effective ways to lose weight include exercises and there are many exercise plans to choose from these days. You can opt for video and DVD programs like The Firm or Tae Bo. You can also take up classes or training programs at the gym. Results vary due to the individual effectiveness of each program and the way participants eat during the day. Quick ways to lose weight also includes the Mediterranean Diet and the traditional Mediterranean lifestyle. In this type of diet, foods are rated as frequent, occasional and rare. Some foods are consumed everyday and with every meal while other foods are eaten once every few days. Then, there are foods that are consumed rarely. It is believed that the long lives of the Mediterranean people can be attributed to their diet. Among ways to lose weight, one of the oldest diets is the low-calorie, low-fat diet. In such a diet, you are restricted to a certain number of calories per day, usually 1600 or less. Carbohydrates can be consumed regularly, while fat-free and low-fat foods are encouraged. The results of this type of diet is questionable as some claim that weight loss attained through this method may be loss of water and muscle. As you can see, there are many quick ways to lose weight. The trick with any diet is to stick to it and to maintain weight loss at the end of the diet. A diet should be looked at as a lifelong plan. With any diet, weight loss cannot be permanent without some diligence on the dieters part. So decide on a plan, take action and stick with it! Want More Fat Loss Tips? Using Annuals in Your Perrenial Garden

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Jill Dow Annuals in your pernnial garden are something to think about! Annuals give you season long color, easy propogation, they’re cost efficient, and provide first season interest. If you’re just starting a perennial garden annuals are a great choice to fill in gaps. I remember my first garden. I bought a couple of plants thinking “This is gonna be great!” A few weeks later I realised this wasn’t true. I needed a whole lot more plants and they cost a bunch! I opted for some annual seeds and I had a really pretty garden by the seasons end.Annuals can certainly help to fill in a garden while you wait for perennial to mature. Even an established perennial garden may have spots where little is blooming at one time or another. Annuals are a great way to fill those gaps and keep color in your garden. They bloom from summer to fall and with a bit of dead heading you can continue to coax them back. Annuals are simple to start from seed which makes them very cost efficient. You can certainly purchase annual bedding plants from a local garden center, but mail order or seeds at the garden center offer you a much wider variety than your standard petunia, pansy or snapdragon. Having A Little Trouble With Your Mid Riff Section?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By John Wellington Alright, I’m sure you’ve heard the spiel before, but what part of your figure do you need to work on next? As much as we hate to have these things pointed out to us, there are commonly a few aspects of our bodies that need work. Probably some of the most common for women are the butt and thigh areas. These two regions of the body often go down hill as a woman ages. It’s totally natural in our society, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be addressed and remedied. Now, for men these problems are more likely to involve the stomach and mid-section. Do you know a good love handle exercise? Hey, you’re going to need one if you’re starting to pack on those mid-drift pounds. Ready to get started? I would be willing to bet money that millions of men have troubles with their mid-sections. This is just that area where all the pizzas and burgers take up residence. Of course the question is; how can one avoid or rid theirself of this dilemma? In my opinion, a great place to begin is with your diet. Now, don’t get the wrong idea! A love handle exercise is also important, but I believe in starting with the basics. The basics involve your diet and fat intake. How much saturated fat do you consume on a daily basis? This isn’t difficult to determine. Simply pay close attention to everything you eat one day. How much fat is in each meal? Add it all up and see what needs to change. My guess is you could reduce some of that fat intake. Most people can. Far too many Americans consume way over the recommended daily fat intake. This is not the wisest route to take. After all, where is all that fat going? Clearly it’s going to your gut. Okay, this diatribe isn’t a scolding; it’s a mere wake-up call. Change your diet for the better. Focus on leaner and healthier meals. Then comes the love handle exercise, There are a few of these your can do. One you will find at the local gym. You basically sit in it with your arms spread apart on pads, and use your mid-section to shift the desired amount of weight, back and forth. It’s a killer at first, but you get used to it like everything else. Then there are crunches. These are a simple exercise that can be performed at home. Do as many as you can handle and watch the fat disappear. You should have known there would be more to trimming up that tummy than a simple love handle exercise. Diet is always crucial when it comes to fitness, staying healthy & avoiding problems that afflict you as you get older. The trick is to get started as soon as possible and stick with it. A Collector’s Note

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Brenda Fleen There is a collector in all of us. Aside from humanitarian and first aid lessons, this is what I learned and realize in the Red Cross camp I attended last spring. To my surprise, people really keep a collection of a thing or two in their lifetime. Some are into toys, comics (Marvel comics mostly), dvd, greeting cards, pens, caps, mugs, jackets, and even the most mundane things like stamps, post-cards, or letters. Those who can spare more bucks collect cars, mobile phones, jewelries, and even villas. And who isn’t aware of the very wide and costly shoe collection of Imelda Marcos reported to have numbered into thousands, still counting. Some I know started collecting as early as the age of 9 or ten. Others start late but are as eager as the early starters. You can just imagine how startled I was when a friend’s cousin showed me his collection of Beatles memorabilias spanning for 30 years occupying the entire second floor of his house. From posters, to concert tickets, records, music videos, autographed notebooks and papers, Beatles-printed mugs, plates, papers, life-size replicas, biographies, and documentaries featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison. Obsession as others may call it, the habit of collecting isn’t essentially a bad thing unless it leads someone to doing harm to others and most especially to him/her self. It is actually an indication of a person’s determination and focus to whatever interests him/her. I am a self-confessed collector and it has been doing me more good than harm (I honestly can’t think of any). My fascination with sports goods began at the age of 7. Having been raised by sports-minded folks, my appreciation for almost all kinds of sports comes effortlessly. My collection began with tennis balls. Until I was about 9 or ten, my dad would always bring me to his Saturday tennis games with his friends. Each Saturday, I would ask one tennis ball from my dad which he would willingly give me upon a promise of behaving well while he was playing. His friends would also give me one every now and then. Before I knew, I already had about a hundred of them displayed or kept in my room. In the mid and until late 90’s my habit of collecting shifted to NBA cards. Widely popular among my classmates, friends, and neighbors, our generation proudly dubbed ourselves as the MJ generation (in veneration of our basketball icon Michael Jordan). My love for the sport made me not only watch every game but to collecting NBA cards as well. I remember even skipping on meals and snacks just to save enough money to buy cards of Jordan, Shaq, and Rodman. When online trading and selling of NBA cards began, I made most of my purchases through the internet. Most of my purchases were through eBay. It has a wide collection of hard-to-find NBA cards and other sports goods for collectors like me. I bought about 30 to 50 cards through eBay and was the envy of all my friends upon seeing how wide my collection has become. My top favorites are the sky view hoop shots, dunks, lay ups, and drive shots of *Michael Jordan*. My Chicago Bulls NBA cards reached about 20 and I’m still planning to buy those I still don’t have. Recently I discovered more websites selling NBA cards, and a lot even offer discounts and promotions. NBA cards being sold in MSN’s shopping site are priced with much higher discounts than say eBay. Just last week, I bought a Dennis Rodman 1997 hoop shot for only $40. Right now, I already have about 500 NBA cards in my collection. I intend to keep them in very good condition for as long as I can. Unknown to many, collectibles are actually good investments. The rare to find cards I bought a couple of years ago are currently priced more than double when I bought them. And the rarer they get through time, the higher the value they obtain. Who knows, I might be able to raise a million if I decide to auction my cards some years from now. Low Back Pain - Ayurvedic Management

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Shashikant Patwardhan Low back pain is one of the most common pain disorders today .It is a chronic condition characterized by a persistent dull or sharp pain per the lower back. It may be also associated with burning, stiffness, numbness or tingling with the pain shooting down the buttocks and the legs. When we stand, the lower back functions to hold most of the weight of the body. When we bend, extend or rotate at the waist, the lower back is involved in the movement. Low back ache is often precipitated by moving, lifting objects or twisting of the waist. Severe pain in the low back can be quite debilitating to patients. Pain in the lower back restricts activity and reduces work capacity and quality of enjoyment of everyday living and turns daily life into a misery. Survey indicates that 70 per cent of the people suffer from low back pain at some time in their lives. The highest rate of back pain occurs among the 45 to 64 year age group. The incidence of low back pain is greater among women. In 90 per cent of the patients, low back pain resolves within six weeks, i.e. self limited. In another 5 per cent the pain resolves by 12 weeks. Less than 5 per cent of back paid account for true nerve root pain. Causes One of the common causes for the backache is poor posture habit. Balanced posture decreases stress on your back by keeping the muscles, bones and other supporting parts in their natural position. Any change from normal spinal curve can stress or pull muscles. This leads to increased muscle contraction, which causes pain. Low back pain can result due to health problems like osteoporosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis. Sprain or strain of muscles or ligaments in the area can also manifest in low back pain. Other possible causes include fibromyalgia and benign or malignant tumours. A fall or blow to the back can strain or tear tissues around the spine, or even break a bone leading to back pain. Lack of exercise or incorrect exercise can also lead to low back pain. Too much weight or overweight also is a cause of low back pain. Treatment Conservative treatment is the most likely course of action for most patients. Treatment options include rest, Traction, Short wave diathermy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, weight control, steroid injections in step by step order. If a patients does not get relief after 8 to 12 weeks of conservative therapy surgical intervention is considered. The most common surgical procedure is a discectomy, which involves removing the soft gel-like material in the disc. This procedure returns the disc to a more normal shape, relieving the pressure on the nerve. the neurosurgeon can also perform a foraminotomy, which is a procedure designed to expand the opening the nerve travels through. Drugs and knives dont always work because from 60% to 90% of disease is not the result of structural injury, but rather of the mind-body response to stress Ayurvedic Perspective Ayurveda holds that low back pain is a result of vitiation of one of the three principal ‘doshas’. ‘Kateegraham’/'Prishtasoola’ or low back pain is an indication of Vata aggravation and bone and muscle weakness. Ayurvedic Treatment Treatment in Ayurveda is to bring the vitiated ‘dosha’ back to the state of equilibrium and thereby to the state of health. For treating low back pain, internal as well as external treatments are done. Herbal preparations like ‘Asthavargam’ are administered internally. Daily purgation is recommended to restore the vitiated ‘dosha’ to the state of normalcy. Ayurvedic Panchakarma treatments like Abhyanga (oil massage), Basti (meditated enema) are very much helpful in relieving backache and correcting abnormalities. Drugs like Yogarajaguggulu, Lakshadiguggulu, Triphala Guggulu, Maanarayana tailam are useful in this condition. Yoga and Yogasana The source of the pain is due most often to pushing oneself beyond physical or emotional capacity. The spine needs stability and, therefore, the mind must first be steady. So, the first step is to learn to relax the mind and focus on the specific areas of back pain. With practice, you can redirect the body’s energy and affect the pain. Among the Yogasanas ,when there is pain, start with simple back-bends, such as Locust, Cat, and Sunbird. To keep the spine aligned practice Hero Pose. Caution- Before trying any of these postures, consult with a yoga teacher or therapist to determine the best postures for your condition. Sarbanes Oxley Training

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By Earl Powers The Sarbanes Oxley Act is incredibly complex and affects several different parts of your corporation in different ways. In order to comply properly with it, you will probably need specific targeted training for what your CEO and CFO need to know about the Sarbanes Oxley training; what your IT department will need to do; what your Board of Directors should be reviewing; and how to oversee Sarbanes Oxley training in its entirety in your business. That’s a lot of Sarbanes Oxley training. Small and large corporations both should be concerned about getting training targeted to addressing Sarbanes Oxley. With smaller companies, generalized Sarbanes Oxley training for everyone along with perhaps a specialized class or two for the IT department on SOX 404, and a class for the accounting department on how auditing and accounting procedures are affected. For larger corporations, more specialized classes may be necessary. Suggested classes for Sarbanes Oxley training All affected personnel in the executive, accounting, and IT departments, as well as key middle management, should get overview training on the Sarbanes Oxley Act. You might consider having this sort of class before starting specialized Sarbanes Oxley training, and following up at the end of all classes with a debriefing meeting for the same personnel, so that special concerns can be brought up and addressed at the same time for everyone. A course on understanding section 302 of the Sarbanes Oxley Act is a must for executive management. A good course on this section will teach you the following: What you’re really certifying. What disclosure controls and procedures are, and how they differ from internal controls. What steps you should take immediately to implement Sarbanes Oxley. What you should do long-term for Sarbanes Oxley. What you should do prior to signing off on financial reports. Your IT department will need some serious training on SOX 404, the part about your internal controls over financial reporting. IT departments have proven to be critical to providing these controls, and they will need to understand what controls they should provide, what they need to change about their current IT practices, and what new software they may need to implement. Your accounting department will probably need Sarbanes Oxley training in a variety of different areas, including SOX 404 and intensive instruction on what kind of auditing procedures they need to implement. In addition, you should consider having a full review of your accounting and auditing practices by a professional trained in Sarbanes Oxley requirements who can examine your entire financial management procedures and determine what Sarbanes Oxley training your company will need in order to comply with these new laws. After Sarbanes Oxley Training As you have gathered by now, the Sarbanes Oxley Act is a very complex piece of legislation that will have a real impact on the way you do business for many years yet to come. After your initial implementation of [Sarbanes Oxley training], you should have someone in your organization taxed with keeping up with new developments, and at least consider followup training every year. The full effects of the Sarbanes Oxley Act are impossible to predict, but if you get the best Sarbanes Oxley training available right now, it should have a minimal impact on your business. Sago Palm Care is Easy

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Andrew Caxton If you want to have a beautiful Sago Palm. be sure to care for your plants properly. Cycas Revoluta. commonly known as the Sago Palm tree. is one of the oldest types of plants that exist. These unusual looking ornamental plants are extremely hardy in their preferred environment. which is warm moist climates. In the United States. a location like Houston. Texas would be a perfect location. The Sago Palm is actually a conifer. with a rough trunk and beautifully light leaves. almost feathery in quality. They are extremely simple plants to grow. and they are well suited as either indoor or outdoor plants. Even the most inexperienced gardener can manage to care for Sago Palms. They are very long-lived. and can tolerate a big variety in their environment. including varying temperatures. amounts of sunlight and the quality (and frequency) of care. There are a few precautions to take to make sure your Sago Palm thrives. The new leaves. which add considerably to the beauty of the plant. are very delicate and should not be disturbed. The plant should not be allowed to dry out completely. especially when new leaves are being formed. As tolerant a plant as the Sago Palm is. great extremes of temperature. either too hot or too cold. will not be tolerated. The Sago Palm grows very slowly. about one inch per year. If you want to reproduce Sago Palms. to fill in your garden more. or to give away to friends. you have to understand this process. Sago Palms are dioecious; plants are either male or female. In order to pollinate them. you have to use the technique of hand pollination. The pollination season is May. but the female seed is already ready to be harvested in January or February. so you can place the seed in water in the beginning of the year and. once the red coating is soft. it can be removed. Leave the hard white coat. You can try to plant it immediately. or hold onto it until spring. The seed is planted sideways. and only the very top edge should be in moist soil. Do not allow the soil to become too soggy. The seed will not thrive if it does. Normally a Sago Palm seed takes three months to start to sprout. but don’t forget that the Sago Palm is a slow grower. so it will be a year before it is even an inch big. In place of hand pollination. another method is to remove an offshoot from a strong Sago Palm. This can be done by popping it out of the ground with a spade. Dry the shoot out for about a week. then plant it and water it very well. Once it is established. you can have another beautiful Sago Palm. as long as you remember to care for it.
