IT Consultant: How To Manage Your Time During Start Up

May 1st, 2008 by gintswaden

By Joshua Feinberg As an IT consultant looking to go solo, how you can cut through the information overload so you can tune out the distractions and focus on only the most relevant, critical tasks for starting up a business? You need to first realize you may need to stop spending time on things that are not making you any money. Adjust Your Priorities If you are serious about starting a business as an IT consultant, you will have to adjust your priorities and manage your time better. When youre first starting out, especially during the first six months to a year, put 90% of what you perceive to be your research and development time and your technology training time on the back burner for the next three to six months. Shift Your Focus to Finding Clients As an IT consultant trying to go solo, you need to concentrate on finding paying clients for your business. Sitting in a classroom, playing with CDTs, getting all these not-for-resale copies of things and playing around in your lab with new operating systems is not helping your business! Once you make this adjustment you will figure out pretty quickly whether you need to get more training. Your Technology Skills Are Probably Ahead of Your Clients Fortunately, youre probably six to 18 months ahead of what small businesses in your area need. Theyre not early adopters, theyre late adopters. Put your business development needs ahead of your need to feel like youre keeping up. The Bottom Line about the IT Consultant As an IT consultant looking to go out on your own, keep in mind you need to prioritize and manage your time effectively. Take all the time you would have spent keeping up and reading magazines, and put it into demand generation, lead qualification, sales calls and follow ups. Does the H&R Block Cloud Have a Silver Lining?

April 28th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Larry Holmes H&R Block (ticker: HRB) has fallen on hard times. Customers are due some $62.5 million dollars after settling a class action law suit against the largest tax preparer in the U.S. It seems that Block was accused of violating consumer protection laws. The company offered fast money, called “Rapid Refunds,” to customers expecting tax refunds. However, they were actually loans repaid by those refunds that charged interest rates of between 29 percent and 750 percent. Not only that, the company recently revised its second quarter financial results to include bigger than previously reported losses related to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. So, for H&R Block, if it wasn’t for bad news there would be no news at all. But what looks bad on the surface can spell opportunity for investors. The truth of the matter is that H&R Block is a very good business that investors can purchase at a bargain price. We know it’s a good business because it’s earning a high rate of return on its own money. In what I think is sure to be the investment book of the year — The Little Book That Beats The Market by Joel Greenblatt — Greenblatt recognizes a good business by its return on capital. He takes earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), and divides it by its net working capital plus its net fixed assets. To determine H&R Block’s return on capital, we would first determine its EBIT for the past four quarters — about $1.04 billion. Then we would divide that figure by net working capital plus net fixed assets — call it $1.2 billion. We get a return on capital of about 87%. Forget the law suit. That’s over and done with. Forget the hurricanes. The damage to Block caused by them is already done. Would you be interested in owning a partial interest in a business that gets a return on its own money of 87%? I would certainly think so. Also, being in the tax preparation business, Block is a very seasonal business. It earns most of its money in the first quarter of the year — the quarter we’re about to enter. After we find a good business, the next question is can we buy partial interest in this business at a bargain price? To determine that, Greenblatt uses earnings yield — EBIT divided by enterprise value (market capitalization minus cash, plus debt). As a back-of-the-napkin calculation, let’s call it 12%. In other words, the company has returned economic profits on their shares of 12%. Compare that with the rate that an investor could get on a 10-year Treasury note of about 4.3% and H&R Block looks like it’s being offered at a bargain price. Of course, there are no guarantees and there are risks. If you want no risk, take the 4.3% that you can get on a Treasury note and hold it for ten years. Also, this article should certainly not be construed as investment advice. It is simply an illustration of how great investors like Joel Greenblatt get great returns (Greenblatt is the managing partner of Gotham Capital with average annualized returns of 40% for over twenty years). They buy shares of good businesses when they can buy them cheap. Despite its recent troubles, H&R Block certainly seems to qualify as such an investment. Food - Tips On Properly Storing Food

April 26th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Michael Russell Keeping your foods properly stored in the cabinet or refrigerator is something that should be taken seriously. Not only will storing your food correctly make it last longer, but it can also keep you healthier. Improperly storing foods can lead to harmful bacteria and spoilage. Let’s take a look at a few helpful tips to keep your foods fresh and lasting longer. Vegetables Keep your vegetables stored in the food crisper in your refrigerator. You can put all your vegetables in there except for tomatoes, onions, potatoes and garlic. Keep your potatoes, onions and garlic in dark place, or even in a paper bag, but not the refrigerator. You should keep your vegetables in plastic bags to hold their moisture and nutrients. You will also put tomatoes in a plastic bag after cutting them. Fruits Most people think they should leave apples sitting out on the table in a fruit bowl, but the truth is, they should be stored in the refrigerator. All types of berries should also be stored in the refrigerator. One fruit that should never be put in the refrigerator though is a banana. It will immediately turn black. Not a pretty sight. Melons, including watermelons, should be stored at regular room temperature until they become ripened. Once ripe they should then be stored in the refrigerator. The same can be said for grapes. Other citrus type fruits can be left outside at room temperature or kept in the refrigerator. It doesn’t really matter with these fruits. Frozen Foods When freezing leftover foods, be sure to put them in an airtight container, or Ziploc bag to maintain freshness. If you don’t, you will have ice crystals form and your foods will be freezer burnt. Meats, chicken and pork can also be put in the freezer to keep. Be sure you do not re-freeze these foods after thawing them out. You must use them after thawing, or throw them out. Milk And Dairy Items Naturally you will always store milk in the refrigerator, but be sure to keep an eye on the expiration date. Throw it out after the expiration date. Another good tip is to buy milk from the store with an expiration date well into the future. Look for gallon containers in the rear of the dairy shelves in the grocery store. They will have the latest expiration dates. It is also a good idea to check expiration dates on all your dairy items at least once a week. This includes eggs also. Meats Always keep fish, meats, chicken and pork in the refrigerator until you prepare them for eating. You want to make sure you keep these items wrapped and away from other foods in your refrigerator to prevent bacteria and keep them from contaminating other foods. One important tip to keep in mind is that fish should be eaten within two days of purchase. Other Items Keep your canned foods in a pantry that is cool and dark. This includes cereals, oils, breads and pasta. Food storage certainly is not difficult, but it does require a little bit of attention on your part. By properly storing your foods you will keep your foods lasting longer and your family will stay healthier. Greeting Cards

April 22nd, 2008 by gintswaden

By Elizabeth Morgan The ritual of sending greeting cards can be traced to the early Chinese, who exchanged goodwill messages to bring in each New Year, and to the ancient Egyptians, who communicated their good wishes on papyrus scrolls. However, greeting cards have only been a part of the tradition of many cultures for about two centuries or a little more, to be precise. The oldest identified greeting card is a Valentines card made in the 1400s, which can be found in a museum in London. It was during the 19th century that greeting cards gained real status. It was during the latter part of this century that cards got incorporated into mainstream culture, so that most of the population could actually afford it. It was around that time that cheap printing came into being and a new trade for printers and artists was born. Soon after, post offices were inundated with millions (literally) of letters during the Christmas week alone. Keeping in line with this new trend were Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving, which gained momentum as suitable occasions for card-giving. By the late 1800s, Valentine cards were completely machine-made. The first of many saleable valentine greeting cards produced in the US was created in the 1840s. John Calcott Horsley was the architect of the first Christmas card, and Louis Prang has come to be known as the father of Christmas greetings. He migrated from Germany and started a small-scale lithographic unit close to Boston in the 1850s, and is generally responsible for starting the production of greeting cards in The United States. His lithographic techniques, including color, had been so perfected that he had no competition from artists and craftsmen. During the 1870s, he came up with exclusive editions of Christmas greetings, which were an instant hit in Britain. In the mid 1870s, he presented the first comprehensive string of Christmas greetings to the American public. Soon after, imitations began to engulf the market, forcing Prang out of business. For nearly two decades after, there was a striking deterioration in greeting card production in America. Things have since turned around into what could be considered a roaring greeting card trade worldwide - a revolution of sorts has taken place. Today there are paper cards in every size and for every occasion. There are even e-cards and digital post cards. Hiring a Criminal Lawyer

April 20th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Christopher Andrews There are a number of situations in life when you have todecide whether to hire a lawyer. For instance, if you’repurchasing a house or having trouble paying your bills, hiring a lawyer may not be a necessity, but it’s a goodidea nonetheless. However, if you’ve been charged withdriving under the influence, assault, or some other crime, hiring a criminal lawyer is mandatory. You’ll want to makesure that your legal rights are protected throughout theentire judicial process. But where do you begin, when you’re hoping to hire aqualified criminal lawyer? One of the best ways to find aneffective attorney is to consult with your family andfriends. There is nothing better than a personalrecommendation, especially one that comes from someone whois close to you. However, there are times when it might bedifficult to obtain a personal referral. In thosesituations, you might consider consulting the local barassociation or an Internet site such as lawyers.com. TheInternet, in fact, can provide a wealth of informationabout individual lawyers. For instance, you can find outabout a lawyer’s level of expertise in criminal law, biographical information, whether the lawyer is in goodstanding with the bar, and other pertinent facts. Inaddition, online archives of your local newspaper mightinclude articles about cases that a particular lawyer hastried. You’ll want to hire a lawyer with plenty ofexperience in the area of criminal law involved in yourcase, whether it be traffic offenses, drug crimes, or whitecollar crimes. The next step is contacting the lawyer’s office. If anattorney cannot meet with you on short notice, don’t countthe lawyer out. Effective lawyers are quite busy, so, if alawyer is short on time, that may actually be a positivesign. Pay close attention to how your call is handled bythe lawyer’s staff. The staff should be courteous and bewilling to answer all of your questions. You should be aware of the fact that criminal defenselawyers tend to charge by the hour. As an alternative, they may charge a flat fee up front. Generally speaking, rules of professional conduct bar a lawyer from charging acontingency fee for a criminal case. Since legal fees canvary, you might want to engage in some comparison shopping. However, be advised that the better lawyers tend to chargemore for their services. Since your freedom and reputationare at stake, you should invest in the best lawyer you canafford. Given the fact that criminal cases are often settledthrough plea agreements with a district attorney’s office,it can be important for a criminal lawyer to be on goodterms with the D.A. Certainly, good relations between thetwo can only enhance your case. Therefore, you’ll want alawyer who has fairly regular contact with the prosecutingattorney in the county in which your case resides. Also,it’s a good idea if you hire a lawyer who is affiliatedwith a group such as the National Association of CriminalDefense Lawyers. Such an association shows that yourlawyer wants to keep abreast of new developments in thearea of criminal law. Prior to hiring a criminal lawyer, be sure to ask forreferences. You’ll want to know how clients view theattorney’s expertise. You should also obtain a copy of thelaw firm’s brochure, so you have a clear understanding ofthe outfit you’re dealing with. It is also vitallyimportant that you obtain a copy of the lawyer’s retaineragreement so that you’re aware of any up-front costsinvolved in obtaining legal representation. In the end, you’ll want to select a lawyer that you’recomfortable with, one that truly understands your case andcan work well on your behalf. You’ll find that aneffective criminal attorney is well worth his or her fee. Gardening With Climbing Roses

April 16th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Sandra Dinkins-Wilson There are roses for almost every type of gardening. So which do you use when you have some vertical space such as a wall or blank side of a house or even an ugly old fence just begging for the splash of color roses can provide? Why, you can use climbing roses and ramblers of course. Climbing roses can be used on some type of support structure or framework to provide color upward in a vertical fashion. They can even be used laterally like along a fence by training the canes out sideways. These support structures can be the usual pergolas, trellises, arches and pillars. But did you know you could also get some ramblers to climb up into trees? It’s simply a matter of providing a good place for the canes to be tied to. To have a tree that ends up being draped with roses, you start with a hole about three to four feet away from your tree that you plant your climbing rose or rambler in (depends on the individual variety and how tall or long the canes will grow). Tip the rose in the hole with the roots away from the tree and the top towards the tree. Finish planting your rose properly. Now there are a couple ways to provide the structure for the roses to grow up into the tree. One, you can provide bamboo canes tied on each side of the tree going back down to the ground on each side of the rose (you can tie them in a travois type manner around the tree). Or provide wires or nylon rope tied up into the tree to a strong branch. As the climbing roses or ramblers grow, you tie the canes to the bamboo poles or to the wire. Once the rose is well into the tree, it should grow on its own well enough without further training. What a sight that would be - a tree blooming with roses the summer long. You can also do something similar with climbing roses growing up the side of your home. As said above, you simply need to provide the proper support structure for them to climb. Either use a trellis or use eyebolts with wire secured to them. Run the wires in a horizontal fashion across your home or you could try a fan-shaped version of wires for the climbing roses to grow on. As before, you will need to tie the canes to the wire or trellis. Should you decide to use the trellis, you just might want to consider a system for it that will enable you to lay it, and the climbing rose attached to it, down on the ground if you should need to do repair work or painting to your home. Some suggest putting hinges on your trellis to allow it to fold down. Another point with the climbing roses growing up the side of your home, is to try to keep it about two inches or better away from the actual side of the house. This allows air circulation behind the rose, which we know, helps fight the various rose diseases. Copyright 2006, Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Looking for more Rose Garden articles? A Guide to Moving to Spain

April 10th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Jerry V. Blackburn Moving to Spain is a big decision. Dont jump in too quickly. Visit the country several times before planning your move. Visit several areas such as the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and Barcelona when choosing your new home. Do your homework and research the new city you will call home. Learn about the culture and history of the area. Make sure you have enough money to live on for a while. This will give you time to find a job and get situated in your new home. Sit down and figure out your budget. Exactly what do you need to live for several months? Be sure to have enough money to cover expenses. The better you prepare, the smoother the transition to your new home. Requirements for Moving to Spain The paperwork required for your move depends on your country of origin. The requirements are different for countries which are members of the European Union and non member countries. Contact the Spanish Consulate in your country of origin for the exact requirements. Do this early to allow plenty of time to meet the necessary requirements. In most cases, you will need certain documentation. Among the common things needed are birth certificates for you and your children, wedding certificates, medical records, degrees earned through education, medical certificates, medical certificates for pets and a criminal background check. The consulate will help you with exactly what you need. You will need to have health insurance. This may be provided through your employer, if you are moving for a job transfer. If you dont have it through employment, you will need to purchase it on your own. Contact your insurance company in advance to find a doctor. This is especially important if you have any ailments that require regular treatment. When you contact the consulate, ask about the requirements for a drivers license. They will let you know the requirements in your case. Be sure to arrange for car insurance. You will need to find a local carrier where you will be moving. Consider transportation once you move. Will you bring your car or sell it? Will you buy a new car in Spain or lease one? You may need to rent a car temporarily until you find a permanent vehicle. This can be expensive and isnt a good long term solution. Take a look at your credit cards. Some can be used in Spain. Find out if you can transfer your account to your new home. If not, you will need to apply for new cards and get rid of the ones you have. Inquire about this ahead of time to avoid waiting a long period for a new card once you move. You will need to spend some time learning the Spanish language. There are many options for learning Spanish. Internet courses allow you to study from the privacy of your home. Start now and learn the basics before you move. Once you have settled in your new home, you can take some advanced classes. Moving to Spain: Employment and Living Unless you are moving for a job relocation, you will need to find employment. If you are job hunting, start looking early. The internet can be a good source of information and job leads. Search job listings and send out resumes. If you are moving for a job relocation, ask about help from the company. Some companies may offer financial help for the move. Others use relocation services. These are professional organizations that help you get situated and acclimated in your new country. They can help with everything from finding a place to live to registering your children in school. You will need to find a place to live. Will you buy a home right away or do you plan to rent for a while? A real estate agent can help you find a place to buy or rent. If you plan to buy, plan to make several trips to look at properties. Will you be selling your current home? Start early to allow time to sell the property and find a new home in Spain. With good planning, your move to Spain will be a lot easier. Paperwork can take more time than you think, so dont wait until the last minute. By planning carefully, you will soon feel right at home. The writer Jerry Blackburn is especially interested in things similar to Spain. His observations on moving to Spain can be discovered on his webpage as well as other web pages.
