How To Lose 80 Pounds Fast

April 7th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Brian Bonito I had a girlfriend who was overweight. At one point she tipped the scales at 230 pounds. Great girl. She had a lot of guts. I helped her lose a ton of weight. She has kept most of the weight off to this day. Im going to outline her program for you here. Here are 7 surefire tips on how to lose 80 pounds fast. Step 1: Get clear with yourself that this is going to happen. For you, failure is not an option. Be strong. Do this by creating a weight loss journal. Write down your starting weight and the weight loss amount for which you desire to arrive. Step 2: Begin by walking, or cycling, 30-minutes a day, five days every single week. Unlike resistance exercises, this is something that you dont need instructions for. This will help you lose weight quickly by kick-starting your metabolism. Step 3: Do not eat within 2-hours of your bedtime. New dieting method: this is where you start. Youre not going to cut the bad foods out cold turkey, but you can discipline yourself to stay out of the kitchen before bed. Trouble sleeping? Take Melatonin. Its found in your health food store. Step 4: Increase your water intake up until 2 hours before bed. Drink 10-12 glasses of water throughout the day, but stop drinking fluids before bed to avoid having to get up in the middle of your sleep. Stay sleeping. This will help fend off those midnight snack demons. Step 5: Join a gym, and go to that gym. You really want to know how to lose 80 pounds fast? Join a community, become a member of a gym. Hold yourself accountable and get to that gym 5 days a week, even if its just to walk on the treadmill, for now. You must be diligent on this one. Push through any known insecurities. Step 6: Dieting tip. Cut back desserts to just one day a week. This is another tough one. If you cant do one day right away, make it two days. The 3rd and 7th day of each week, this builds discipline. When youre feeling stronger make it just one day. Then decrease the bad foods. Step 7: Lose weight faster. Be progressive. When the activities on this list become manageable, stretch your efforts further. Not so far that your progress suffers, but make a push to do more. Always be on the lookout to get better. Add more exercises, get some personal trainer assistance and begin resistance training. My girlfriend knew the real secret on how to lose 80 pounds was simply sticking with it. She didnt do any exotic. No crazy dieting. No weight-watching counselors, no weight loss extravagance. She just decided she was going to do it and then carried out her weight loss plan. You should do the same. Get your FREE subscription to Underground Weight Loss VIDEOS. Plus a FREE copy of the Fat-Slashing Power Formula: Weight Loss Secrets! Perfume Definitions And Facts

April 6th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Sandy Lindberg The following are definitions and facts about perfume that you may not know. This information might enlighten, delight, and educate you when purchasing the right fragrance for you or for someone else. Perfume Pleasant odor, a preparation used for scenting, fragrant, sweet, or agreeable in smell. (parfum) Perfumery A perfume house that creates perfumes. Nose A nose is a person who creates fragrances. Years ago perfume making was handed down throughout generations among families. However, now there are schools dedicated to the science of perfume making. Currently, there are three major French perfume-makers having their own in-house blender. These three are Chanel, Guerlain, and Jean Patou. Eau de Parfum (EDP) 10-30% aromatic compounds. Usually has the most intensity and longevity. Eau de Toilette (EDT) 5-20% aromatic compounds. Usually is less intense and less longevity than EDP. NOTE: Different design houses may vary the intensity where EDT may be stronger than EDP. Eau de Cologne (EDC) 2-5% aromatic compounds. This is a type of light perfume that originated in Cologne, Germany and is defined by its typical concentration of about 2-5% esential oils. Eau de Cologne, or just “cologne”, has now become a generic term. Ironically, however, the original Eau de Cologne from Cologne is not an Eau de cologne, but anEau de Toilette, because it contains more than 5% aromatic compounds. Why do many older people use too much perfume? As people get older, their sense of smell diminishes. Therefore, they apply too much perfume. Does a fragrance smell the same on everyone? No. Everyone has a unique body chemistry based on skin type, hair color, and the environment in which we live. It is important to try a fragrance on your skin to see how it reacts with your own body chemistry. Also, different skin types affect the fragrance. Oily skin holds scents much more than dry skin. People with dry skin need to reapply more often. How long can a fragrance be stored? Fragrances do not last forever. Fragrance bottles should be stored in a dry, dark place. Keep them away from heat as extreme temperatures can detroy them. Colognes and eau de toilettes (not parfum) may be kept in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Fragrances can last up to three years from manufacture date. Take care to check dates. Does perfume stain clothing? Most perfumes are safe to spray on your clothes without leaving a stain. Where can I purchase designer perfumes at very discounted prices? Contact fragrantbeauty@tampabay.rr.com and they will get you an excellent price. They will also work with you to find discontinued or hard-to-find fragrances. Customer service is important to FragrantBeauty. Sandy Lindberg is owner of FragrantBeauty.com and is an artist. Lose Weight & Keep It Off

April 5th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Wade Thomas “Weight Loss Warning” - Describes a physician’s investigative shopping experience at health food stores and the purchase of herbal diet supplements. There are several effective ways for weight loss, but most diet experts recommend a combination of healthy eating patterns and regular physical exercises. But a lot of people like to turn to pills, potions, herbs, camps, surgery and other ways to lose weight. Remember to always consult a doctor before beginning a weight loss diet or exercise plan. Exercise and a balanced diet are the most important factors in weight loss. Follow a calorie-reduced, but balanced diet that provides for as little as one or two pounds of weight loss a week. You should avoid any diet that suggests you eat a certain nutrient, food, or combination of foods to promote easy weight loss. When selecting a weight loss product or program, gather as much information as possible. Here are a couple of sites that will help you make an informed decision: www.TopWeightLoss.com features tips, tricks, articles and topics for making an informed decision about a weight loss program. www.WebMD.com also is another great resource for getting started losing weight. Sites featuring tools such as calorie calculators, meal plans, recipes, chat groups and information from weight loss experts. There are also as many weight loss information books on the book store shelves, as there are cookbooks. You will find essential health and weight loss information that helps you take charge of managing your weight, and restoring your self esteem. But use caution before implementing anything that you find. Make sure that it is a healthy, long term way to lose weight, and not an over night diet fad or gimick. Healthy Weight Loss For healthy weight loss, most experts recommend a combination of healthy eating patterns and regular physical exercise. A physician should be consulted to develop a weight loss plan that is tailored to the individual. No matter what the reason, successful weight loss and healthy weight management depend on sensible goals and expectations. For safe and healthy weight loss, try not to exceed a rate of two pounds per week. It’s your complete roadmap to guaranteed permanent weight loss and a healthy lifestyle forever. Programs With so many weight loss programs on the market, the challenge is to find one that fits your lifestyle. When investigating weight loss products or programs, beware of high costs, pressure to buy special foods or pills, and fraudulent claims. You want programs that are designed to produce weight loss at a rate of approximately two pounds per week. There are three types of weight loss programs: 1. Non-clinical programs 2. Clinical programs 3. Do-it-yourself programs 1. Non-clinical Weight Loss Programs These weight loss programs may or may not be commercially operated, such as through a privately-owned, weight loss chain. These weight loss programs use counselors (who usually are not health-care providers and may or may not have training) to provide services to you. 2. Clinical Weight Loss Programs This type of weight loss program may or may not be commercially owned. This can be anything from prescription drugs to hypnosis seminars to gastric by surgery to weight loss camps. A. Prescription Diet Drugs Many prescription diet medicines have side effects and may not work for long-term weight loss. Phentermine weight loss pills are an example of a weight loss drug. Meridia is a weight loss drug that when used along with a reduced calorie diet will help you reduce weight. They even say that on their website, www.merdia.net But it’s not the pills that will keep your weight off. It’s your choice of using it in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet plan, and if you add exercise, your amount of weight loss will increase dramatically!! B. Hypnosis Programs Weight Release is the number one selling and most effective hypnosis based weight loss program in the world. When you use a personalized weight loss program your chances of losing weight and keeping it off are increased. New weight loss program shows how anyone can lose weight with this proven plan. Again, it’s not going to do it by itself, but coupled with determination and desire, it can help people lose weight safely and keep it off. C. Surgery This is why gastric bypass surgery tends to produce greater weight loss than other bariatric operations. Only your personal medical adviser can give you accurate advice about whether weight loss surgery is a good option for you. By doing this you get all the benefits of weight loss surgery including reduced risk of diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease and cancer. This option, known as bariatric surgery, can result in dramatic weight loss. Bariatric surgery is another type of weight loss surgery that has become the popular choice for treating morbid obesity. But should only be used in extreme conditions and under the suggestion of atleast one or more medical professionals. ( I would personally always seek a second opion to the risks and benefits before considering such an extreme measure. ) D. Weight Loss Camps Camp Shane is the oldest of the weight loss camps. It’s a summer weight loss camp were overweight children are happy to be. Camp Shane being one of the best known weight loss camps, is owned and directed by the Ettenberg family. Run exactly as a traditional camp, without unduly focusing on weight loss as a problem. Camp Shane is a weight loss camp where you feel comfortable, welcome and good about yourself! 3. Do-it-yourself & Free Programs There are TONS of free weight loss programs, recipes, over the counter herbal supplements, and huge resources of experts and articles about weight loss available on the internet!! Finding the right plan for you and then following it is the challenge. Also, experimenting with chinese herbs and over the counter supplements can be VERY DANGEROUS!! Extreme caution needs to be used when trying to design your own diet plan. Tips to Consider Before Starting a Weight Loss Plan See your doctor for advice about your overall health risk and the weight loss options that are best for you. Achieving sustained weight loss and its accompanying health improvements requires changes that can be maintained for the long haul. Prescribed weight loss drugs should be used only if you are likely to have health problems caused by your weight. Doctors will tell you that the majority of weight loss products on the market are scams. Many products show quick results in water and muscle weight loss. But doing it the healthy way is usually a challenge. Quick weight loss or fast weight loss is not the answer to obesity. Because of the complexity of weight loss, gain, and maintenance, promises of quick and effortless weight loss are worthless. Slow weight loss is the safest and most effective approach. Many trying to lose weight continually struggle to find an effective weight loss method. You should also note that while a supplement may or may not be effective for weight loss, it may well have other uses. The solution that I found is Weight Watchers. You can eat anything that you want to eat, stay within some basic good heath guidelines and the reason it works the best is: Because you don’t feel deprived. Simply stay with it for 8 to 12 weeks and see the first 10% of your body weight come off. Then decide where do you really want to be. Set that goal, and start moving forward towards it step by step. You may be surprised to learn it’s not what you eat but what you don’t eat that is behind your weight loss problems. For the best results, go and find a live meeting, instead of doing it online. Most people need the value of the support group. You can find one by visiting www.WeightWatchers.com Wade Thomas is a certified teacher of weight loss for Weight Watchers in South Florida. Each week, over 250 people learn how to lose weight, get motivated and keep it off by the strategies imparted by Wade. He has lost over 33 pounds and has kept it off for 2 years. He talks about his struggles, challenges, successes and more importantly his members’ stories, challenges and successes. By modeling successful people in any field, you can achieve the same results. How To Meet Men

April 3rd, 2008 by gintswaden

By Tonja Weimer If I stated the following truth to a group of single women, which is, There are lots of wonderful men out there to meet, they would boo and hiss until my ears fell off. They wouldnt believe me. If I disagreed with the belief they live by, which is, you shall never find a good man because theyre all gone, what could they point to as the reason they are still alone? Women (and men) remain alone for several reasons, including their belief that there is no one to find. Other major blocks are that they dont know where to go to meet someone and what to do when they get there. I know this much for sure: there are some fabulous single guys for you to meet. Why cant you meet more men? You have to get out of the house and then look in the right places. Many attractive, nice guys are shy. They dont go out much. You have to put yourself in the places where men can be found. You can meet men in the following places: 1. The Gym Meeting men at the gym is a win-win. Heres a chance to get in shape and expand your dating world. For lots of guys, besides the grocery store and the gas station, this is the only stop they make on their way to or from work or on the weekends. If you dont see any men to meet at your gym, try another time of day or another place to work out. BIG TIPS: smile, make eye contact, and say hello. Dont be afraid to start a conversation! And find workout clothes that are flattering in colors and fit. First impressions last. 2. Sports Events Men meet their men friends at sporting events, but they could meet you too if you go there. You can watch football, basketball, or baseball at the actual event or in a sports pub where they have a big TV. Wherever the sports are being watched, you will find guys. The Pittsburgh Pirates used to be my favorite baseball team. I knew every players stats, where they came from, their batting average, and their pitching strength, as well as the stats of the teams the Pirates played. It was a benign obsession, but I could talk baseball with anyone, anywhere. Cab drivers and I became instant friends when I asked about the players on the team in their city. They were so thrilled to talk baseball with a woman, they wanted to marry me, even though my husband was in the cab. My point is this: if you want to meet a guy, see if you can get interested in something guys like. 3. Male Dominated Professions Meeting men is easy if you go to where they are. There are trade shows, conferences, and expo shows all over the world that most of us would never know about. They are targeted to a professional niche that has few women. Engineering, aeronautics, industrial computers, electronics, bio-chemistry, automation and instrumentation, building trades, manufacturing, farm sciences, and many more male dominated fields exist where men are absorbed in their work and have a hard time getting out to meet people. Be a sleuth and find out where these groups can be found. Somewhere near you, men are attending a symposium or trade show. Look in your local paper, ask some of your friends, or the husbands of your friends, and hatch a plan to either work in one of the booths, or wander the aisles, looking at the displays. Get creative and determined. Finally, always look your best when you are about to meet thousands of guys! 4. Recreation How do you meet men? Go take a class to learn how to do some of their favorite things. Try chess, darts, kayaking, fishing, white water rafting, woodworking, motorcycles, golf, scuba, bowling, baseball, mountain climbing, biking, tennis, racket ball, and flying. You arent going to find many guys sunning themselves by the pool, shopping in womens stores, or taking a dance classthough they should if they want to meet women. 5. The Hardware Store Hardware stores are one of the easiest places to meet men. There are so many appliances and gadgets and interesting materials in a hardware store, you could walk around all day and ask guys questions. You could actually go with a project in mind, like building a birdhouse. Or you could go and find out what kind of a kitchen you would like to have some day. Think of more possibilities for reasons to ask guys questions. Guys love to solve problems and dispense information. Head out to any of the above mentioned places where guys hang out. Dont forget to smile, talk, and be friendly. This is how you meet men. Anti-Depressants: Is The Cure Worse Than The Illness?

March 31st, 2008 by gintswaden

By Talia Mana This is the sort of book you wish your doctor would read. It looks holistically at depression considering the biomedical model (i.e. there is something wrong with your body and in particular your brain) as well as psychosocial factors, lifestyle changes and other environmental influences. Is It Me or My Meds is penned by David Karp, who has long term depression and anxiety. He interviewed 50 people (including teens) with major depression and manic depression to gauge their attitudes about taking antidepressants and dealing with depression and the stigma around it. Why people take antidepressants Commonly accepted wisdom is that depression is caused by a biochemical balance in the brain which can be helped by taking antidepressants. Not everyone accepts this hypothesis. Some believe that depression and other mental illnesses can be fixed through meditation, counselling or other types of therapy, dietary changes, exercise or sheer willpower. According to an anonymous academic who blogs here http://clinpsyc.blogspot.com Please. There may well be brain issues in people with various mental illnesses, but this whole chemical imbalance thing is 95% marketing, 5% science. Find a serious scientist who will step up to the mic (sic) and tell us about the definitive chemical imbalance that causes bipolar, schizophrenia, or much of anything else in the mental disorder world. While there were many people that resisted medication there were some who welcomed it with relief. Many patients were anxious for anything that might grant them some relief from unrelenting feelings of sadness, worthlessness and at times suicidal ideation. Individuals reported varying degrees of success with antidepressants. For some, taking medications were a lifesaver that enabled them to feel more confident, overcome feelings of hopelessness and get on with life. However large numbers of people reported dissatisfaction with the side-effects of meds, failure of the meds to work effectively, gained only short-term relief from antidepressants or felt ostracised by being labelled as someone who needed to take psychotropic medications. There were several patients who refused to take meds, or found themselves hopeful that they would one day be able to wean themselves off antidepressants. Overall, the majority of patients interviewed did not like taking meds for depression, bipolar or anxiety. This attitude is also reflected in the attitude of the author, who has tried unsuccessfully to withdraw from taking antidepressants and antianxiolytic meds. The people interviewed referred to searching for identity and not knowing whether the self on drugs is the normal person or the one off drugs. Many felt pressure to conform to societys expectation of normalcy. The book includes a quote from Francis Fukuyama:There is a disconcerting symmetry between Prozac and Ritalin. The former is prescribed for depressed women lacking in self-esteem; it gives them more of the alpha-like feelings that comes with high serotonin levels.Ritalin on the other hand, is prescribed largely for young bots who do not want to sit still in class because nature never designed them to behave that way. How your relationship with your doctor affects you It was also evident throughout the book that the relationship of the individual to their health professional made a substantial difference. In situations where the individual felt that the health professional listened to their needs and offered trustworthy advice, patients were more likely to take meds and more likely to have success with them. In this respect the placebo effect of medications was influenced not only by the knowledge that they were taking meds for their depression but also by their trust in the Health Professional prescribing the meds. Married to antidepressant meds The author has a wonderful quote on taking meds:an unexpected relationship will become permanentHe uses this quote (from a fortune cookie) as an analogy to taking meds. He suggests that many people are encouraged to take meds as a temporary measure not realising that for some they will need to be on antidepressants for the rest of their life either because the illness is too severe or because the withdrawal symptoms of stopping are too painful. Doctors encourage patients to take meds likening the antidepressants to treatments for diabetes or headaches. However there is one critical difference - antidepressants are mind altering substances. In my experience with doctors they are all reading from the same script. They all want you to believe that antidepressants are better than the alternative. Im not convinced that is always the case. From my own personal experience the side-effects of meds often outweigh the benefits. Do the drugs really work? The author points out many of these drugs are relatively new. While they have been tested and found safe this is only within the parameters of their testing. If a drug has only been around for 10 years there is no way to know what its long term effect may be on someone who needs to take that med for another 50 years. For many the improvement from antidepressants is only slightly greater than the placebo effect. According to one study of SSRI antidepressants http://content.apa.org/journals/pre/5/1/23Approximately 80% of the response to medication was duplicated in placebo control groups, and the mean difference between drug and placebo was approximately 2 points on the 17-item (50-point) and 21-item (62-point) Hamilton Depression Scale. There were many patients interviewed in the book who had little or no relief from the prescribed antidepressants or find the side-effects unpalatable. The book is sympathetically written and will be helpful for people feeling isolated, confused or curious about anti-depressants. It is ideal for anyone who has ever considered taking medications for depression or other mental illnesses. It would also be useful for anyone who has colleagues or loved ones with depression, bipolar (manic depression) or anxiety. iPods & Theft, Of Body Fat That Is

March 29th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Michael Michels Twenty years ago we used cassette players, ten years ago it was portable CD players, five years ago we were burning our own CDs and since then it has been the onslaught of the ever popular iPod and other related MP3 players. Our world has changed so drastically in such a short time period. This new revolution has been so big, that I am now crediting these iPods and MP3 players with literally tons of weight lost during exercising. For those us who exercise regularly, these devices have become the norm in our workout routines. Glance at any runner, walker or people working out at a gym in your area and you will see what I am talking about (as if you have been living in a cave). The percentages are much higher today than in the past. Have we become antisocial towards other people? Maybe, but maybe we are just in the iZone. We love these things so much and for so many reasons. So, whats the big difference? Whether its twenty years ago or today, we are still listening to music. Why are we so addicted to these machines and what about them puts us in this iZone. The differences are obvious. First comes size. Those old clunky cassette players and CD players were just too big. Although you could strap it to your waist or arm, it just was not that appealing to have it weighting you down, besides the fact that the CDs often skipped and the cassettes needed to be flipped. The newest players are as small as a pack of gum or even smaller and we have an abundance of accessories that aid us in forgetting that we are wearing them. Second, we can store a near infinite number of songs on our little white gems. Regardless of size we can choose from somewhere around 100 songs to tens of thousands. WOW! That just blows those old fossils out of the water. Imagine a new MP3 player on sale at your local electronics store that holds a whopping 15 songs! Huh? Doesnt sound like such a hot buy? Well in the 80s and 90s our cassette players and CD players held just around that many. Now lets talk about ease of use. We didnt mind recording tapes and CDs that much, but boy was it time consuming. We now use our computers with USB or Firewire cables and boy it is an absolute snap. We save time and picking songs is simple also. No more loading cassettes and then fast-forwarding to find a spot. CDs may have been a little bit easier, but they still required the right equipment and time. Those are the obvious differences, but not the leading reason for our lust. We are in love with the individuality and diversity that these machines afford us. The words individuality and diversity have been etched in our vocabulary over the past ten years and that is exactly what iPods and MP3 players deliver for us. With the ease of use and song storing capacity we gain an immense amount of power. We stuff these creations chock full of diversity. Everyday in our lives we have many moods. Maybe we just had a bad night or maybe we just got some great news. Without worrying about any extra time or thought, we can go to the gym and scroll through artist after artist and pick what our mood demands. We almost never have a loss for music that appeals to us. It could be a brand new hit single or some song from the past that gets us psyched and ready to go. The primitive ancestors we were accustomed to just couldnt deliver this remarkable feature. Imagine being instantly motivated because of a library that seems endless. That is exactly what the creators of these modern marvels have done for us. We hear stories about the obesity epidemic in America almost everyday. So how can my claim be substantiated? Regardless of any other factors, we have a large amount of people in this country who workout on a regular basis. Gym memberships have increased over the past decade. Of those people exercising, a significant percentage of them are utilizing our newest technologies to their advantage. iPods and MP3 players give us a chance to get out of our bodies and minds for that workout period and can actually make time seem to go faster. Instead of thinking about every step you take, your mind is focused on that song that is geared for a specific mood. You have an almost out of body experience. This iZone creates a new place for us. This place allows us to perform at an optimal level regardless of where we are and who is around us. So keep those batteries charged and those song lists fresh and Americas weight loss will continue on its current hot streak for those of us who are committed to staying healthy. If you havent begun yet, this is such a great way to get started and make a difference in your life. Pick up an iPod or take that one you have off your desk and start working out. Join the revolution. It can be as simple as a short walk here or there or you can renew that old gym membership. Any place can be a starting point to a new lifetime commitment. Update that song list and give it a try. Let those songs release your minds grip over your body. It can change the way you think about exercising. I guarantee you will experience the iZone for yourself. Good Luck and what the heck, sing out loud while you run down the block! Steps for Filing a Social Security Disability Claim

March 28th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Sara Goldstein Social Security Disability (SSD) is paid to people whove been in the workforce but are now unable to work and need to start getting their Social Security benefits earlier than the standard retirement age. Its governed by the federal Social Security Disability Act. If youre over 31 you would usually have to have worked and paid into the Social Security system for 5 of the previous 10 years If youre under 31, that requirement is modified What does disabled mean? The federal Social Security Administration sets this meaning. Disability can be physical or emotional or a combination of these It must be severe enough to prevent you from performing a regular job for at least a year A doctor must state that youre disabled by medically acceptable clinical and laboratory findings. Sometimes a disabling condition cant be established by standard testing, especially if it has an emotional component. If you find yourself in that situation, a good disability lawyer can help. If youre become disabled and are unable to get your old job back, that in itself doesnt qualify you. If youve been looking for a job but been unable to find one, that also, in itself, doesnt qualify you. The issue is: Are you physically and emotionally able to do some kind of job thats available in the workplace? Can I apply for my own SSD? Yes, everyone can apply for their own benefits. But dont expect it to be easy. Long waiting lines Complicated forms to fill out Complicated regulations You may be denied even though your claim is legitimate You may be denied again at the appeals stage It can be quite discouraging and tedious. Theres another level of appeal where you have a live hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ). You can argue your case and provide evidence and might be able to win at that stage. But people who are represented by a lawyer win their benefits a lot more often. Claim denials Claims are begun by filing in person at your local SS office, or by telephone. If your claim is denied at any stage, and you dont appeal, your claim is dismissed. Then you must start again. You should appeal the denial if you think your claim is legitimate. The time limit for appealing is 60 days. There are 4 levels of decision: 1. Initial determination 2. Reconsideration 3. An ALJ Hearing 4. Review by the appeals council If youre denied at all these levels, a case can be filed in a federal court. If you have become disabled but been rejected for social security disability benefits, contact a disability lawyer for a free legal consultation. The SS regulations allow you to hire an attorney on a contingency fee basis and theres a cap of $5,300 for the lawyers fee when you win.If you have to take your appeal all the way to a federal court, this cap is raised to 25% of all past due benefits eventually collected. So dont give up too soon. Acupuncture For Migraines-Effective or Not?

March 26th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Anna Hart Migraine. Just the thought of it causes dread for millions of sufferers. Many have learned to expect and live with migraine pain, but they would rather not think of the next episode. Acupuncture for Migraines What Is Involved? Acupuncture is a type of alternative or complementary medicine, derived from traditional Chinese medicine. This treatment for pain involves insertion of fine needles into particular points in the body known as “acupuncture points”. The needles are then gently manipulated. Acupuncture for Migraine Prevention - Between Attacks If you decide to try acupuncture for migraines between your migraine attacks, and have an acupuncturist who distinguishes between prevention and treatment, you may receive SES acupuncture for migraines. You will receive your SES treatment in a sitting position. Fine acupuncture needles will be inserted very shallowly into your skin. The acupuncture points chosen for SES will usually be on your forearms and lower legs. The needles will then be gently manipulated, pushed back and forth, by hand while you exhale. Acupuncture for Migraine Treatment - During Attacks If you decide to try acupuncture for migraines during a migraine attack, and receive a typical treatment, fine needles will be inserted into acupuncture points all over your body. The needles will then be gently pushed back and forth. As it is moved, each needle will cause small blood vessels around itself to dilate. This will increase the blood flow throughout your bodys tissues. Your acupuncturist may take a different approach, however. Since your migraine pain is generally believed to be linked to blood vessel dilation in your head, he or she may not want to insert needles in the head and neck area. To do so might make your pain worse temporarily. Instead, your acupuncturist may use only the acupuncture points on your arms and legs. Great Britain Research on Acupuncture for Migraines * On 15 March 2004, four British newspapers reported on a study that found acupuncture helpful to people with migraines. * The four papers based their stories on a randomized, controlled trial. That trial studied the effects of using acupuncture for migraines along with more common types of care. The trial was conducted in twelve (12) different areas of England and Wales. It involved 401 patients in all. It reported results for 301 of those patients. * Patients treated with acupuncture for migraines had less severe headaches than those who received more common treatments. The patients treated with acupuncture for migraines also had fewer days off work, took less medication, and visited the doctor less often than did patients given only standard care. United States Research on Acupuncture for Migraines Two publications in the United States have published studies that have lead to strong, positive conclusions on the effectiveness of acupuncture for migraine relief. 1. Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Under the title, Acupuncture for Patients with Migraine, JAMA published a study involving 302 patients. Most of the patients were female. Patients were grouped into those who received acupuncture for migraines, those who received sham acupuncture for migraines, and a wait-list control. The researchers concluded that sham acupuncture was no less effective than regular acupuncture. Both acupuncture for migraines and sham acupuncture, however, had much greater positive effect on migraines than did the wait-list control. 2. Blackwell Synergy In this study, 160 women were studied to determine if acupuncture for migraines was effective or not. This study pitted acupuncture for migraines against the use of Flunarizine for migraines. * Group A received acupuncture for their migraines every week for two months. After that, they received acupuncture once monthly for four months. * Group B was given Flunarizine every day for two months. After that, they received the medication twenty days out of the month for four months. The studys conclusion was profound. Acupuncture for migraines won as the more effective treatment of the two. Acupuncture for Migraines Does It Hurt? You may be among those migraine sufferers who see acupuncture for migraines as a choice between the pain of the headache and the pain of needles. You may be among those who have an intense fear of needles. How can you get past the fear? 1. FIRST: Seek out a well-qualified, professional acupuncturist. Get recommendations, if possible. Be sure the acupuncturist is licensed and certified according to the law in your area. 2. SECOND: Visit the acupuncturist before making an appointment. Ask to see needle-sterilizing procedures. Ask if they use disposable needles. 3. THIRD: If you still fear the needles, ask if there is an alternative. Some offer magnetic needles, ear cups, and/or herbal methods. 4. FOURTH: Make an appointment. When you go for your appointment, be sure you explain exactly the problem you are having, its frequency, and intensity. Provide as much medical information as possible. This will help the acupuncturist provide the acupuncture for migraines treatment that is best for you. NOTE: It is wise to keep your primary health care provider aware that you are using acupuncture for migraines in addition to or in place of any treatment he or she may advise. 2007 Anna Hart. Interview Questions To Ask: Questions You Can Ask During An Interview

March 24th, 2008 by gintswaden

By Carl Mueller What interview questions to ask is a question that job searchers often ask themselves when preparing for their interview. The questions you ask during an interview can be a critical part of showing an interviewer that you are interested in the job and knowledgeable about the company. Sure, youre going to be asked most of the questions during the interview but youre expected to ask questions yourself, too. Remember that interviewing is a two-way street. Employers almost always allow you time to ask some questions during an interview and you need to be prepared with some questions and also account for the fact that some questions you might want to ask get answered during the course of the interview. When considering what interview questions to ask, remember to ask questions that relate to the company, the job and to what you offer the company. Your list of interview questions to ask should be typed out on a plain sheet of white paper and brought with you during the interview. Dont try to memorize the questions, write them down. What specific questions should you ask? What questions shouldnt you ask? Obviously, the specific job and industry will largely help you decide what interview questions to ask the person you are meeting with when discussing a job. Here are some good interview questions to ask that should help you put a short list together that you can tailor for each interview you attend: Interview Questions To Ask About The Job Can you describe the ideal candidate for the job?Could you describe a typical workday for the position? What special skills does this position require? What special skills would your ideal candidate possess? Can you tell me a little bit about the people Ill be working with? Can you tell me a little bit about the people Ill be managing? (If you are managing staff)Is this a newly created position or am I replacing someone? How will my performance on the job be measured? How much travel does the job require? Interview Questions To Ask About The Company What does the company do better than its competitors to distinguish itself? What are the immediate goals of the department youll be working in? What are the immediate goals of the company? How does the group youll be working in fit into the organizational structure of the company? What is the biggest challenge that the company faces? What is the companys competitive advantage? What does the interviewer like about the company the most? Depending on who you meet during the interview: Interview Questions To Ask The Hiring Manager What specific goals do you have set out for this job in the first 6 months/12 months? What challenges do you see me having to face to complete these goals (the goals they mentioned in the first question). What could I do in this role that would make your job easier? Interview Questions To Ask A Human Resources rep Does the company offer employee training? What is the company policy on continuing education? Depending on who you speak with when you end the interview: Interview Questions To Ask Before You Leave The Interview Are there any other questions I can answer regarding my background and suitability for the job? Are there any questions you asked that I can further clarify for you? Do you have any concerns regarding my suitability for the position? How do I compare with other candidates you have interviewed? What is the next step in the interview process? Carl Mueller is an Internet entrepreneur and professional recruiter who wants to help you find your dream career. Ask Her Out for the Fourth of July!

March 22nd, 2008 by gintswaden

By Camille Johnson The Fourth of July is just around the corner. Why not celebrate the holiday at a barbecue or a fireworks show with that special someone you’ve had your eye on for some time? How can you make it a memorable evening and the beginning of something more lasting? if you want to make a great first impression leading to more dates with her, follow these tips. 1) The ‘Golden Rule’ is to ask her out at least a week in advance. People’s calendars fill up quickly, especially for holidays and special events. However, if you’ve just been invited somewhere yourself and it’s OK to bring a new friend, it’s not too late to call her (do it NOW though!). Tell her exactly how this invitation came about and that she’s the chosen one! 2) While e-mailing her may be tempting, it’s best to pick up the phone and call. Using the phone and reaching another person, or at least leaving a message on their answering machine, is more personal and a classier way to ask a potential date out than an email. 3) On the phone, be specific about what the event entails and when it starts. This shows that you’re respectful of his/her time and are organized and have planned this thing out. 4) If she says yes, start planning the details. If you’ll be taking her to a friend’s barbecue, make sure your friend is OK about you bringing a guest. Don’t let a surprise foil your evening once you two are there, like finding out your friend was playing cupid for you that night and ’surprising’ you with a date! 5) Think about presenting her with a small gift when you pick her up. If you don’t know her well yet, stay safe with a bouquet of flowers or balloons or some chocolates rather than a glass of wine (maybe she doesn’t drink) or jewelry (too personal for a first date, even if it’s inexpensive). 6) Mind your manners on the date. Introduce her to your friends and make sure you don’t ignore her by getting into a long discussion with a buddy about last week’s game. Remember that, unless she knows most of the people there, she probably feels somewhat nervous about socializing with a bunch of strangers and will appreciate your introductions and a certain amount of watching out for her. 7) When you take her home, don’t act too eager to get invited into her home. In fact, it’s often a good idea to take the initiative to tell her good night at the door, that you had a great time (if that’s the case!), thank her, and leave. Leave a little mystery. Whatever you do, don’t say you’ll call her if you have no intention of doing so. Even so, be sure to thank her for her time. 8) If things did go well, call her in a couple days and tell her you’d like to see her again and set another date, this time for just the two of you.
